Tony
What does an RV warranty cover and how do you know which one to choose?
Peggy
This week on the Stressless Camping RV Podcast, we are talking to Kevin Jeske from America's RV Warranty. And he is giving us a presentation w- just presentation style. We filmed him presenting it-
Peggy
... because he did such a great job. We don't know if we would have come up with all the right questions.
Tony
Yeah, it was, it was very well done, actually swayed us on his company. And then, we get to speak with Will Knowles and Matt Foxcroft from Liquified about something stinky you might not be aware of.
Peggy
We have all the show notes, along with deals, discounts, tips, tricks and more on our home on the web at stresslesscamping.com. Thank you for joining us for episode 342.
Tony
Whoa. Stressless Camping.
Peggy
Stressless Camping. I'm Peggy.
Tony
And I'm a happy camper-
Tony
... because I'm Tony.
Peggy
And we're two RV industry veterans who travel part time.
Tony
In this Rockwood Mini Lite. W-
Peggy
Lookin' to share big adventures and help you with great tips-
Tony
Tips, tricks.
Peggy
And discounts.
Tony
Yeah, fa-
Peggy
Well, he only took one sip and he's already messing up.(laughs)
Tony
Well-
Peggy
We are really enjoying our time. We are coming to you live from the Quartzsite Sports Vacation and RV Show.
Tony
This one.
Peggy
And we are diggin' it.
Tony
Yeah, yeah.
Peggy
It's been terrific. The weather, I c- I, like-
Tony
Yeah, we're so grateful.
Peggy
I don't even wanna say. It's so fabulous.
Tony
This has been a good year for weather.
Peggy
Yeah.
Tony
So it's been a, it's been a fun year. And you know what that means? That means the sun is shining, which means it's powering our Rockwood Mini Lite-
Peggy
Right.
Tony
... thanks to our Mastervolt power system that was installed by ABC Upfitters.
Peggy
It all works together. ABC Upfitters put in our system with all Mastervolt parts, the battery, the controller, the inverter, the wiring, the nuts. The everything is all made by Mastervolt, so you don't have to wonder who's gonna point a finger at who, m-(laughs)
Peggy
Y- you have a problem, which is very unlikely, you're gonna call ABC Upfitters and they are gonna get you fixed up without saying, "Well, you have to call this company," or, "You have to call that company."
Tony
Yeah.
Peggy
Or, "Blah, blah, blah."
Tony
They can even remote into your system if, if need be. But, you know, just, the things just work together. We're very pleased with the system. We continually test it by being out here-
Tony
... in the desert and, and wherever we go. And they helped us to tailor the system to the way we like to camp. And if you want a system that's customized for the way you like to camp, well, all you have to do is give ABC Upfitters a call at 574-333-3225.
Peggy
That's 574-333-3225. There's probably a QR code if you wanna click on it and you'll be able to see more information about ABC Upfitters. It just works. Ha ha, I stole your line.
Tony
Ah, I'll drink to that.
Peggy
So speaking of not pointing fingers(laughs) and-
Tony
Well-
Peggy
... not sending you off to another phone call and another phone call.
Tony
As you may have known, when I worked at the dealership, I sold a lot of RV extended warranties. And the company that we worked with there paid the claims. It was simple. They weren't fiddly about payin' the claims. We really thought they did a good job. We have worked with another company, uh, for a while w- who we have had good experience with. But when we heard this presentation that you're about to hear from Kevin at America's RV Warranty, I was so impressed, I said, "We're gonna start working with them," because they are not only the administrators of the program, it, they are the program.
Peggy
Yeah.
Tony
And they're backed up by a real insurance company. So it's, it's all the things I look for. And this is the presentation that Kevin gave.
Peggy
Yeah, normally, you know, we would have Kevin sitting here with us and we would ask him questions. But frankly, what if we didn't think of the right questions? And Kevin's presentation covered all the things that I think you need to know. So we just asked him to do it in front of the camera. So let's share it now.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Welcome. My name is Kevin Jeske and I'm here with America's RV Warranty. And we are gonna show you the RVer's roadmap to peace of mind, a guide to RV warranties. Little bit about my background and why I do these pro- these promotions and these videos is that I spent 15 years now in the, uh, automobile industry as finance and insurance advisor, traveling the country, training, uh, F&I p- people. The last 12 years I've spent in the RV industry in the same role as finance and insurance director, and the last five years with America's RV Warranty.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
So I got a pretty good background, 30 plus years in, in the warranties and the understanding and what they cover and what they don't. So here we go. We're gonna start the presentation now. Um, Your Journey Begins, and we're all here because we love the journey. The freedom of the open, open road is what all of us RVers, um, community is all about. But e- even the best planned journeys can have unexpected detours, like a mechanical breakdown. This presentation is your roadmap to navigating these detours. Since every RVer's journey is unique, um, your protection plan should be too.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
That's why we offer customizable plans, from cu- comprehensive coverage to pans- plans that just protect your drivetrain and your coach. Uh, our destination today is trying to find you true peace of mind, so you can focus on the adventure and not the anxiety.... that happens when a breakdown occurs. So we lo- we believe in a three-legged stool of RV protection. To have a truly stable and worry-free journey, you need to have a balanced approach. Our balanced approach would be leg one, would be your RV insurance.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It's required by law. It covers physical damage from acts of God, theft, accidents, weather, collisions, water damage, water intrusion. You need to make sure that you have that to begin with to protect your 100,000, 200,000 plus RVs. Leg two would be roadside assistance. That's your first call for flat tire, a dead battery. If you need to get to a safe location, that's our number one priority, is to call the police if we have to, to gi- make sure that you're safe on the road and get you off the road.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Leg three is extended warranty, and that's our focus. Extended warranties cover the mechanical and electrical failures of components inside and outside of the RV. Stop one, understanding the landscape. What is an extended warranty? An RV extended warranty is a service contract that pays the parts and labor to cover and repair mechanical and electrical failures from the front, to the back, to the top, to the bottom of your RV.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It picks up where your manufacturer's warranty leaves off, which is typically only one to two years. It's designed to protect your budget from the high and rising costs of RV repairs, especially complex systems like your appliances, your slide outs, engines, or transmissions. Stop two is very, very important on the journey. We wanna make sure you choose your route, the two different types of coverages. What we prefer and what everybody should be buying when they look is you wanna make sure you're getting an exclusionary policy.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
This is the bumper-to-bumper in their state. It's the highest level of coverage. It functions like a ma- a manufacturer's warranty. The simplest way to think of it is everything is covered except for a short list of excluded items. Exclusions are typical typically for maintenance items like tires, windows, upholstery, light bulbs, batteries, wear and tear items that you have on your, on your RV. The second route is the scenic route, what we call the listed component policy.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It's a good policy. Yes, it will cover your vehicle, but you've gotta make sure because it only covers the specific components and systems explicitly named in the contract. While still good coverage, you have to read the map carefully. If a part isn't specifically listed, it's not covered. A good way to do it is to picture you have 500 parts over here. You take your RV in for repair. Say it's an AC, AC unit over here, you shoot it across. If it connects, it will be covered under stated, under the listed component policy.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
With the exclusionary policy, you can miss it and it'll still be covered. It ca- takes care of the gray areas. Another stop, number 2A, that's reading the signs between mechanical failure versus physical damage. Mechanical failure is covered. So power awning, the motor that extends and retract the awning burns out from use. That is a covered mechanical failure. If it was excluded, it'd say the awning fabric is torn by high wind, a tree branch, or becomes sun rotted.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Unfortunately, the awning material itself is not covered. The motors and the arms are, so we would cover those, but with the, uh, awning fabric, when that happens, you have to purchase it yourself. Refrigerator, the interning cooling system stops working or the electronic control board fails. That is a covered repair. A plastic shelf inside cracks or the door seal is torn. That is not a covered repair. We will not be doing that. And with refrigerators, I always like to bring out that a lot of people have the larger fifth wheels, toy haulers or class As or Bs or Cs that have the full residential fridge in them.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
When that happens, unlike our competitors, we will replace it and we will actually, uh, when we're replacing the entire fridge, we will get it into a shop where you will take out the slide. We will remove the old refrigerator, put the new refrigerator in, and then put the slide back on, and we do cover all of those repairs and the labor costs for that. The slide out, the motor stops working or the gear mechanism breaks during normal operation. That is a covered repair. The slide out box is damaged from hitting a post or the floor suffers water damage from a bad seal.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Unfortunately, that would be on your own or it would be your RV insurance would cover that. Air conditioner, the internal compressor seizes up or the fan motor fails, preventing it from cooling. That is a covered mechanical failure. The plastic shroud on the raft cracks from UV exposure or is damaged by a long hanging limb. Unfortunately, that is physical damage. That is not covered under a extended warranty. And then the leveling jack, the hydraulic pump fails or the electronic control panel malfunctions.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Those are covered. A jack shaft that gets bent from hitting a curb or lowering onto a rock. Unfortunately, it happens frequently and we do not cover those because that is physical damage. Here is stop three, navigating the cost. Let's look at a little some of the financial impact of a common roadside detour. These are real world averages and costs that can derail any travel budget. A refrigerator can be 1,200 to 3,500. Can be a lot more than that if it's a residential size.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Leveling jack systems can go from 2,500 to 7,000. Air conditioners, 1,200 to 2,500. Even higher if you have a heat pump involved with it. Slide out motors, 1,000 to 3,000. So you can see these are very expensive repairs. A warranty turns these budget breaking emergencies into a single management deductible, and we offer a $100 deductible, $250 deductible, 500 or 1,000 based on the needs and what you're looking for in your plan.Stop four: common detours, myths versus reality.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Before you choose a plan, let's navigate around some of the most common myths and potholes that you'll encounter on the road and you'll hear from other RVers. Myth one: My RV is new, I don't need a warranty. Well, reality: Manufacturers' warranties are short, one to two years, and new RVs often have the most shakedown issues during that time period. Problems frequently appear right after the factory warranty expires. It just happens. I don't know how. Can't explain it, but it's, it's karma.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It's the second it runs out, something tra- happens to your RV. Myth two: I'll just put money in a savings account. Reality: As we saw, a single repair like a $7,000 leveling system can wipe out your entire repair fund instantly. I had something very similar happen. I tried this route. It did not work very well for me. A warranty provides a predictable cap on your expenses, so instead of paying the 7,000 out of your nest egg that is now gone, you could pay your deductible, 100, like I said, 250, 500, or 1,000.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Myth three: Warranties are a hassle and never pay out. Reality: This feeling often comes from dealing with brokers who pass you off to a third party. When you deal directly with the administrator, the entire process is fast and accountable. We are not a broker. We are the administrator. Potholes to avoid, part one: choosing the right partner. The broker runaround. Is the company selling the plan the same one that approves and pays for claims?
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
If not, you're buying from a broker. This can lead to finger-pointing, delays when you need help the most. Because they have their hands in the pot, they're trying to get what they can. With us, we are the direct administrator. The team that earns your trust today is the same team that pays your claims tomorrow. We handle it all in-house. The per-item deductible. This is a budget killer. If your AC, fridge, and slide out all need work, a per-item plan will charge you three separate deductibles for that one visit to the shop.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
So if this was a $100 deductible, to repair those three, it would be $300. We do not believe in that type of a philosophy for deductibles. We only use the per-visit deductible, which means one visit, one deductible, no matter how many parts are repaired. So you could have four or five, six, seven plus parts. You can come in, pay your $100 deductible. We take care of it all for you. Uninsured policies, another pothole. If a contract isn't backed by a major A-rated insurance carrier, your policy is only good as the company's bank account.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
A major event can leave them unable to pay claims, and we've seen it happen before in the past with major events and financial downfalls. That can happen, and you'll be leaving, you'll be left holding the bag. With us, all of our contracts are backed by an A-rated insurance company, guaranteeing your claims will be honored. That insurance company is Fortegra Insurance Company out of Jacksonville, Florida, an A-rated insurance company with over $3 billion in assets. So if anything were to happen to our company, and you had a seven, five, six, seven, eight-year plan, you would be covered.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
We're going to move on to potholes to avoid part two: uncovering hidden fees and exclusions that other warranty companies try to sell you on for these. The full-timer surcharge. Many policies add a hefty fee if your RV is your primary residence. They add a 500, 600, $700 charge on top of your fee. Our plans include full-time usage automatically. We've seen that that is becoming more and more popular, so we believe that we have it accessible for those that wish to go full time.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
The consequential loss exclusion. If a small non-covered part fails and damages a major covered part, you're on your own, okay? That's what happens. But with our plans, they all include consequential loss coverage. So if that uncovered part fails and makes a covered part fail also, we will repair them all. It's, you sometimes hear of the domino effect, um, in engines and items like that. The power surge exclusion. A bad campground pedestal can fry your electronics, a common hazard most contracts won't cover.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
Our plans include protection from all power surges. Limited mobile mechanic coverage. Watch for policies that don't me- cover a mechanic's travel fees, okay? Our plans include generous mobile mechanic ser- service call coverage. And being the administrator, this is one thing we listen to our customers, is that we have always, eh, loved having the l- limited, uh, the mobile mechanics come out to you. We listen to the customers. They love the idea. They just did not like having the, the ability or having to pay the travel fee, which is usually about $150, it's an hour's worth of labor, to get to them.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
So what we said is, "You're right." So now, every time you have a claim and we send a mobile mechanic out, we pay up to $500 for their travel fees to get to you, because that is what you wanted and we believe that that is the best way to go. America's RV Warranty, the difference b- with us. The America RV Warranty difference: We are the administrator, not a broker. This is the single most important difference. You're buying directly from the company that builds the plans, authorizes the repair, and pays the claims.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
The team that earns your trust today is the same team that will be here for you when you need help on the road. We have direct in-house claims. We are located in Kennesaw, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. So we are local and our call center is local here. Um, direct in-house claim. Your repair shop talks directly to our, to our experts, the decision-makers for faster approvals.Total accountability. We are fully responsible for your service from day one. We have no finger pointing, no runaround.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It is us and you and your mechanic. We work directly with your mechanic and yourself to satisfy your claim as fast as possible. Unmatched flexibility. You can use any licensed repair facility or mobile mechanic in the United States, um, or Canada, and that will include Alaska and Hawaii. The claims process, a smooth road ahead. With us, un- unfortunately with our competitors, you may be speaking with a live person, you may get a recording, and you may be speaking with a call center overseas.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
We are located right here in Georgia, or right in Georgia. You'll always be speaking with a live person, and our agents are also RV experts. So you're not speaking with a note-taker, somebody that'll forward it on to somebody else to call you back. You're immediately speaking with a claims s- um, a claims agent that can take care of you. Step two, you are s- report an issue. You and your repair facility calls our claims department. We set up a claim. We have claims 24/7. The, we authorize the repair, if you're, from your repair facility.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
If you need assistance finding a repair facility, we will do that also for you. We have a comp- we have a website called RV, um, Repairs Near Me. And you can put in your zip code and within 25 miles you'll pull up all of the highest rated, uh, mechanics and mobile mechanics for your RV. Step two, we authorize the repair and our team authorizes the repair over the phone. Unlike other companies, our authorization and adjudication usually takes between one and three or four hours.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
It's a very quick turnaround. Step three, we pay the shop. We pay the shop directly, um, you're only responsible for your deductible. Uh, we'll also pay their labor, taxes, and everything else included with that. More reasons to journey with us. There is no inspection required to have a warranty from America's RV Warranty. We do not require a third p- party's inspection to start our policy. We actually use a 30-day waiting period, and that is because they do have some nefarious characters out there that will come, want to purchase a warranty already having a transmission issue.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
They purchase it, they try to get it repaired, they repair it, we pay for it, then they cancel. So that's why we have a 30-day waiting pro- waiting period. If you do have an inspection done on your RV by a third party c- company, we actually will take that and waive our 30-day waiting period. Transferable coverage. You own the policy outright. If you sell your RV, the policy can be transferred to the new owner, so we can transfer what's remains to them, um, adding resell value.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
You can also cancel the policy at any time for any reason. And what we do is we prorate it based on how many days you were in the policy, and then we minus any claims paid. A lot of warranty companies will forget to tell you that portion. So if you had a $5,000 refund coming back to you, but we paid $1,000 worth of claims, your refund would be, yes, $4,000. We are backed by an A-rated insurance company. All, all of our contracts are backed by Fortegra Insurance.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
We talked about that. Also, before we plan your route, we'd like to let you know that we cover motorhomes up to 20 years old or up to 149,999 miles, the only warranty company that will cover a motorhome over 100,000 miles. And we cover our towables, so fifth wheels, trailers, it could be a truck camper, uh, tow away hauler, we cover those for 15 years, um, so that is nice.
Kevin Jeskey - America's RV Warranty
And then all of our policies, you can purchase a policy from one year all the way out to eight years depending on the age of your vehicle. And we work directly with you with that. So that is the presentation for today. Uh, I appreciate everything, and I look forward to speaking with you. My name is Kevin Jeske. I'm with America's RV Warranty. Thank you for your time.(clapping) That, was that okay?
Tony
That was really great.(horn blowing) Well, if you were flushed with Kevin's information, you will really be flushed with what Will and Matt have to say here.(toilet flushing)
Matt Foxcroft
Hey, everyone, it's Matt and Will, the founders of Liquified, the best RV toilet tank treatment in the industry. Now, Will, everybody's heard of our RV toilet tank treatment, but a lot of people here at the Quartzsite RV Show isn't super familiar with our gray tank treatment. Tell us more about it.
Wil Knowles
Yeah, guys, a lot of times we find that gray tanks can smell worse than black tanks. Reason being is little bits of food particles get in there, grows mold, can grow mildew, all kinds of stuff going on in there. That's why we la- we launched our gray tank treatment. This is a different fragrance designed for your kitchen sinks or your showers and, and bathroom sinks as well. It's designed to break down the food particles, kill the mold in the tanks, and get rid of that mildew smell.
Matt Foxcroft
Especially not having a gray tank flush-
Wil Knowles
Yes.
Matt Foxcroft
... like you do a black tank flush. If anything, it's actually more important to pour Liquifyde down your gray tank than your black tank, but obviously it's super important to do both. So make sure you guys check us out online. Go to liquifydeRV.com, and right now we're doing a special here during the Quartzsite RV Show till January 31st, buy two get one free, live here from me and Will or on our website. Click the link down below. Thank you so much, Tones.
Tony
Will and Matt sent out an email. Actually, it was really Jen.... who sent out an email-
Peggy
They did.
Tony
... and we liked that information a lot about the gray tank, and Will and Matt are here in Quartzsite, so we were like, "Hey, can you say a couple words about that?" And that's how we- that's how that happened.
Peggy
We have noticed in the past, I think it is that the black tank you expect to smell and the gray tank you don't think is, it's just a little bit of shower water, right?
Tony
Yeah.
Peggy
And the, the smell always surprises us-
Peggy
... uh, especially in the kitchen, because it takes longer to fill, so it sits longer, and it's more greasy food stuff and, you know. Anyway, uh, we hope that you get a chance to try Liquefied. If you are at the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation, and RV Show, make sure you go to their booth and get a super deal.
Tony
Yeah, you can meet Matt and Will.
Peggy
Yeah, you can get a super deal.
Tony
And Jen.
Peggy
You can meet Matt and Will and Jen, and you can get three bottles for the price of two.
Tony
Yeah.
Peggy
So you can't beat that.
Tony
It's a great deal. In fact, we bought more.(laughs)
Peggy
Can't pass up a good deal. So last week we asked you what your favorite part about attending an RV show, and I appreciate the people who answered. You know, as a lot of you said, I mean, I know some people go to buy an RV, but I go to buy stuff.
Tony
Although we have not really bought anything yet this year.
Peggy
We haven't bought a s- a ton of stuff. I bought new scrubbies for the kitchen sink, but we haven't bought a lot, but th- it's only halfway through the week right now, so.(laughs)
Tony
That's true. As we record this, it's Tuesday. It'll come to your inbox on Thursday.
Peggy
Yeah, we have plenty of time.
Tony
So there's still a few more days. It goes through Sunday. So, and if you're here, we're in the seminar tent, please stop by and say hi.
Peggy
Please stop by and say hi.
Tony
We have met a bunch of you already and it's so great to meet-
Peggy
It's great.
Tony
... all of you.
Peggy
We love when people just pop in and say they listen to us, and we're like-
Tony
They're like-
Peggy
We are starstruck by your starstruckness.(laughs)
Tony
And we ask ourselves why. No, I'm just kidding.
Peggy
Yeah, we kind of do.(laughs) So this week, because of Liquefied, I was wondering do you treat your gray tank, or g- gray tanks, you know, if you have, uh, one gray tank like we've usually had, or in a bigger rig you often have a separate one for the kitchen and one for the shower. Do you use any kind of treatment in it? Have you noticed a terrible smell? Do you think it's the back black tank and you need to actually try treating your gray tank to find out?(laughs)
Tony
Yeah. If you don't know, I don't have much of a sense of smell, but oh, I could smell the gray tank. Ooh la la, and I no like it.
Peggy
Mm-hmm. Of course, you know that you want to respond to those questions and answer and ask, uh, any question that you might have at our fun and friendly Stressless Camping Facebook... Nope, that was wrong. Stressless Campers Facebook group.
Tony
Yep.
Tony
So we had a new section a few weeks ago, and then we skipped it, that's us.
Peggy
Yeah.
Tony
But it's RV being silly, and Peggy promised the cottage cheese story.
Peggy
Yeah. Tony mentioned cottage cheese in his s- in his silly story about renting an RV, and it brought to mind the time that I was traveling with my grandparents, and they actually had a motor home that was a converted Frito-Lay delivery truck. So that was pretty cool. Uh, that's not the silly part. I mean, it kind of is, but-
Peggy
What I specifically remember is sitting at the dinette with a, a sis- my sister or my cousin or whoever was with us, and my grandmother was going to make lunch. And so she was just getting into the refrigerator as my grandfather didn't believe how slow the sign told him to go, and he took a curve a little faster than he should have. As my grandmother opened the refrigerator, and the cottage cheese fell out... Now, this was in, like, the '70s, and so, like all RVs were carpeted back then, right?
Peggy
So the cottage cheese fell out, smoosh, right onto the carpeting. Words were said.(laughs)
Tony
Probably words your grandma told you not to say.
Peggy
Probably, uh, yep. Uh, fortunately, I don't recall there being a terrible after smell. She must have got it cleaned up pretty well, but, uh, and, and I truly don't remember whether I laughed or, or looked on in terror. Uh, I think nowadays I would still not know what to do.(laughs) I'd want to laugh, but I'd also be looking on in terror. So anyway, I guess the moral of the story is, if someone's fixing lunch and opening the refrigerator, slow down on the curves.
Tony
Yeah. Well, that's what we have for you this week. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe. Tell your friends. Uh, sign up for our weekly no spam, except once a year when we go visit-
Tony
... the Spam museum, newsletter. Thank you so much for being here. We appreciate you so much. We hope maybe to run into you here at the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation, and RV Show.
Peggy
RV show. And in the meantime-
Tony
Have a beer on-
Peggy
There you go.
Tony
For me. In the meantime, stressless camping.
Peggy
Stressless camping.
Tony
I don't know why I had to smack you with this.
Peggy
I don't know why either.(laughs)
Mark Ferrell
