Oklahoma Route 66 stops

Oklahoma Route 66 stops

Note for the geography buffs: No, we did not visit Missouri before Oklahoma. We just got mixed up and posted our updates in the wrong order!

As we continue our Route 66 adventure we spend a bit more time in Oklahoma. Tony was really surprised at how lush and nice Oklahoma is after, perhaps, forming his opinion from Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. This is why travel is both inspiring and educational. During the trip we got to visit a number of stops that will definitely bring us back.

Oklahoma Railway Museum

We had the privilege of staying at the Oklahoma Railway Museum. Our host, Eric met us this morning and gave us a tour of the Railway Museum.

The museum houses some really unique train cans depicting Oklahoma’s railroading history. One car is non-mobile and filled with a model train layout. Another displays small rail-related items. We made plans with Eric that next time we visit we will get to ride in a speeder!

Oklahoma City

We drive through the city on our way back to Route 66 then headed northeast toward our evening’s destination.

Pop Stop

We stopped in Arcadia to fill up the gas tank and be amazed by the supply of pop at Pop’s Soda Ranch. We filled a 6-pack carrier with a variety of flavors, then filled a fountain drink with a lot of ice. We finished the root beer and poured in the cola for more bubbly goodness.

Muffler Man!

In Tulsa we made a stop we’ve been waiting for days to visit! Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios is home to Buck Atom, a muffler man made just for his job overseeing Mary Beth’s souvenir shop. We’ll be hearing more from Mary Beth in the near future!

A Whale of a Tale

We’ve been dreaming of seeing this curiosity for quite some time. In Catoosa, we pulled off to see what the it was all about. Apparently at one time it was a sort of swim platform; there were slides and a diving board. However, there were also signs not to swim in the pond. So we didn’t but we did take a bunch of photos. Also, we saw our very first armadillo!

The Grand Caravan

Within about 20 miles of our destination, Monkey Island, Peggy’s mom called. She was three miles behind us. Then our nephew called. He was literally the car behind us. Our nieces and Peggy’s sister were in the near vicinity as well. By the time we got set up at Monkey Island RV Resort and headed to the timeshare where the rest of the family is staying, they were all settled along with Peggy’s aunt and cousin. We gathered for a BBQ and let the kids play in the pool. Everyone was pretty tired from all the driving so it was a quiet night.
